We are now looking for motivated, creative individuals to join the volunteer team.
This is a golden opportunity for art, communication and marketing students or recent graduates looking for practical experience in the arts and creative industry. We will offer you a unique volunteer placement within an experienced team or art practitioners, artists, gallery managers, designers and curators. If you are interested in participating in the Kampala Art Biennale 2018 as a volunteer, we would like you to fill out the application form at the bottom of this page.
You are expected to be available from 10th August – 26 September.
The following volunteer positions are available:
Social Media, Communication and Marketing Assistant
Social Media, Communication and Marketing volunteers will assist the Media Coordinator in hosting the various (local and international) media that visit the Kampala Biennale. You welcome members of the media, provide them with press badges, programme information and exhibition specifics. You will answer questions about the Biennale, arrange for interviews with participating artists, organisers and KAB18 visitors. The volunteer will share media coverage, articles and KAB18 related events and photos on our social media platforms. You are required to have excellent writing skills, and knowledge about Facebook features, twitter, blogging and photography. You will also help to ensure sponsor visibility and publicity during the events and on exhibition locations. You will be supervised and guided by the Media Coordinator and the Director/Assistant Director.
Symposium and PR Assistant
You will help with the planning, set up and ensuring smooth running of KAB symposium events; Symposium The Light and the Business Forum, KABLAB as well and discussions that are planned for during the months of August / September. You will help with the registration process of guests and speakers, sign in participants and make sure they receive the required information and materials. You will confirm speakers and workshop facilitators and make logistic arrangements at the venue. You will be reporting to the Logistics Manager.
Exhibitions Installment and Technical Assistant
The Exhibitions installment Assistant will work closely with the curatorial team. You will help to execute the delivery of video and other visual art displays, help with construction and layout of exhibition spaces and live projects (performances). Help with buying of construction materials, construction, painting of panels as well as hanging and installation of works. Assist with printing labels and text with artist and project information. We are looking for volunteers with a practical hands-on mentality. You will be supervised by the Logistic Manager and Curator.
Exhibition Guide and Info Desk
Volunteers assist in providing information about the Biennale, its programme and KAB18 materials and merchandise. You are responsible for the dissemination of information at a specific venue/ exhibition location. You will provide guests with an informative tour of the exhibition. You will keep a register of visitors (guest book) and keep the exhibition location neat and tidy. You must have good knowledge about the exhibited works and artists, be good-humored, and have excellent customer service skills. Together with the other exhibition guide at the location you will organise regular art tours of the venues. You will be supervised by the Logistics Manager and Curator.
Logistic Assistant
Logistics volunteers are expected to assist guests and visiting artists. You will help to ensure that arriving artists and curators are picked up from the airport and settled in their accommodation. You will make sure that artist in residence have access to studio space and materials. For foreign artist, you will assist them to find their way around Kampala and make them feel comfortable, inform them about restaurants, shops, health and road safety etc. You are required to keep time, especially for airport pickups and drop offs. A valid driving permit & car is an advantage. You will be under the supervision of the Logistic Manager.
Curatorial Assistant
Curatorial Assistant volunteers will work closely with the curatorial team headed by Simon Njami. You will assist with various tasks and need to be able to work under stressful conditions and with deal with time pressure. Under direct supervision, you will provide support to all day-to-day aspects of the care of the art works, including assisting in the planning, development, research, and implementation of the selected works for the KAB18 exhibitions.
