Kibuuka Mukisa Oscar is a self-taught photographer, b-boy and social worker living and working in Kampala. Coming from a creative family background, he discovered his passion for photography at the age of 18, which he later turned into a profession. With a strong influence of hip hop culture and socially motivational causes, Kibuuka evolved the motto “give a smile to the world” which he endeavours to portray in his work. Kibuuka is working on a life long project documenting the Ugandan “youth and hip hop culture” with a focus on breakdancing.
Kibuuka’s accomplishments include solo and group exhibitions in East Africa and Europe, including: Visionary Africa – Art at Work, Kampala 2012; Mr and Mrs Afrika Copenhagen 2013; One Moment project Estonia 2013; and most recently ‘Woman in Resistance’ with Pierre Yves, National Museum of Uganda 2014; ‘Hip hop Culture Uganda’ with Joel Sames, Switzerland 2014 and Break-Through festival Switzerland 2014 and 2015.
In 2013/2014 Kibuuka was the winner of the Uganda Press Photo award and attended the 3rd Annual Addis Foto Fest under the Goethe Institute ‘Moving Africa Program’ in 2014.
Kibuuka’s photography has been published in local, international, online and print magazines and newspapers including The Washington Post, Start Journal, MO magazines, The East African, Taz die tageszeitung, and African Music Festival Network.
