Born in 1970 – lives and works in Paris
Virginie Yassef holds a graduate degree in visual arts from both the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts de Paris (ENSBA, the French National School of Fine Arts) and Sorbonne University. Furthermore, she completed a post-graduate degree at La Seine, which is a research program at ENSBA, and won a residency scholarship from the Vienna-based Quartier Museum in Austria and 4 months residency at Location One, New York in 2006. She recently (2016) received a residency support from CNAP to make a research in the Sami area (north of Norway).
She is represented by the Georges-Philippe & Nathalie Vallois gallery in Paris, where she recently held a private exhibition. Her work has been shown, among others, at the Art Center Galerie in Noisy-le-Sec (solo show), the Art Center La Ferme du Buisson in Noisiel (solo show with Julien Bismuth), the CRAC Alsace in Altkirch (solo show with Su-Mei Tse), The Jeu de Paume in Paris (solo show), the French Institute in New York (solo show) and at Granit in Belfort (solo show). She will participate to the next white night in Paris (October 2016)
Her videos, photographs, sculptures and installations reveal the poetry of everyday life, emphasizing the subtle gap between perception and reality. In the universe of Virginie Yassef, the strangeness, sometimes even supernatural, surfaces always where one would least expect it.
